Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has been sentenced to 9 years in prison for embezzlement of budget funds in the “jacket case”.

Judge of the Tbilisi City Court Badri Kochlamazashvili announced the decision. Former head of the Special Guard Service Teimuraz Janashia was found guilty of abuse of office and fined 300 thousand GEL, reports “Ekho Kavkaza”.

Saakashvili and Dzhanashia had previously repeatedly denied all charges, emphasizing that the case was political and related to the persecution of the opposition.

From May 1, 2009 to February 25, 2013, on Saakashvili's instructions, they spent about 9 million GEL (then it was about 5.4 million dollars) from the state budget for personal needs of the former president

Now Saakashvili is already serving a six-year sentence behind bars. Earlier the courts sentenced him in two more cases - for illegal pardoning of Sandro Girgvliani's killers and for organizing the beating of MP Valeri Gelashvili.

The new sentence for Mikheil Saakashvili will be counted from the date of his arrest - October 1, 2021. According to the court decision, Saakashvili will be able to be released not earlier than October 1, 2030.

He is still being tried for the events of November 7, 2007 and illegal crossing of the Georgian border.
