On Feb. 5, the Senate confirmed Pam Bondi as U.S. attorney general, who now runs the Justice Department.

A memo released in a wave of executive orders on her first day in office said the effort - known as the KleptoCapture task force - will be discontinued as part of a shift in focus and funding toward fighting drug cartels and international gangs, The Guardian reported.

"This policy requires a fundamental shift and approach," she said.

Bondi added that resources now devoted to enforcing sanctions and seizing oligarchs' assets would be redirected to countering cartels.

Efforts during the Joe Biden administration were aimed at curbing the financial standing of wealthy associates of the Russian dictator and penalizing those who contribute to sanctions and export control violations.

It was part of a larger effort to drive Russia out of global markets and enforce sweeping sanctions imposed on Moscow amid international condemnation of its war in Ukraine.

Under the directive from the new U.S. attorney general's office, prosecutors assigned to the task force will return to their previous positions. The changes will be in effect for at least 90 days and can be extended or made permanent.
