Positions may change during peace talks.

“I think a deal will come out of this that will shock a lot of people,” US Vice President J.D. Vance told the Wall Street Journal.

Vance said the option of bringing U.S. troops into Ukraine if Moscow fails to negotiate in good faith remains “on the table,” and spoke much tougher than Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who suggested Wednesday that the U.S. would not commit troops.

“There are economic tools of influence, there are certainly military tools of influence that the USA can use against Putin”, he said.

He said US President Donald Trump would not go into the deal “with blinders on” and declare “all issues are on the table, let's make a deal”.

Trump could change his stance depending on how the negotiations unfold.

“President Trump could say, look, we don't want this, we may not like it, but we're willing to bring this issue back on the table if the Russians are not going to be good negotiating partners or if there are things that are very important to the Ukrainians that we might want to take off the table,” he added.
