A surprising vote of support for the UK Supreme Court's ruling has come from a German transgender man.

The UK Supreme Court ruled yesterday that there are only two sexes - male and female. Today, that claim was echoed in Germany, surprisingly by former Green Party member of the Bundestag and transgender Valerie Wilms, 71.

According to Die Welt, she adheres to the division between men and women, Wilms told the Berliner Zeitung. Everything else is "pure sociological dreams that have no scientific basis," the politician said.

In her newly published book, Wilms describes how she was born and raised as a boy in Hanover in 1954. During puberty, she noticed that something had changed in her; while studying to be a mechanical engineer, she played a "secret game of hide-and-seek with women's clothing." Only when she was married and had two children did she encounter the topic of transsexuality. In the mid-1990s, she underwent medical treatment and was reassigned to female in the district court.

"The reality is that we have two biological sexes: male and female. Despite my transition, I was and remain a biological man." The claim that there are 70 genders or gender identities is “completely unfounded,” Wilms said. She described transsexuality as a “mental illness.” The fact that doctors now view transsexuality as “gender incongruence” is a mistake, Wilms said.
