Effective, efficient and versatile: why it is now necessary to develop assault units

Despite various loud - and often empty - statements from across the ocean about the imminent ceasefire, Ukraine continues to defend its independence on the battlefield. On why it is extremely important to deal with the issue of defense force development and on the strengthening of which types of troops should be emphasized, read in the material of Lenta.UA.

Let's start with good news. In February, the lowest rate of offensive of the Russian troops since July last year was recorded. The bogs are justified in telling all sorts of propaganda nonsense like that a supposedly fast offensive would have a bad effect on the Kremlin's negotiations with the States. Of course, this is utter nonsense. The reasons lie elsewhere - in the effective work of our defense forces, and the lion's share of the load is carried out by the assault units.

As domestic military experts point out, it was thanks to the assault units that the rapid advance of Russian troops was stopped, and some offensive operations over the past six months have become part of the glorious history of victories of the Ukrainian army.

But to understand why exactly assault units are so important in the issue of defense, we need to dwell on the specifics of their work. After all, it is quite a popular myth that our infantry sits in the trenches, defending positions and doing nothing else. In fact, it doesn't work that way at all.

In the current environment, classical defense, burying oneself in the ground without initiative, more often than not leads to heavy losses and the risk of breakthroughs by the enemy. And this is where assault squads come into play, able to suddenly counterattack the enemy. Mobile assault groups break the entire strategy of the enemy, who believes that no one will risk to strike “in the opposite direction”.

Now the media is paying a lot of attention to unmanned systems units. They say that it is necessary to invest in them as much as possible, and then there will be a result. And indeed - this is a very important element of the current war. But we should not forget that the front is held by infantry. And storm troopers play a key role here, as they can at any moment confuse the Russians' cards. That's why we need numerous professional assault units in order not to roll back. Otherwise, not only will we not gain an advantage on the battlefield, but we risk retreating all the time.

It should be noted that it takes a lot of attention and time to train and develop assault units. In the current realities, we are talking about an integrated approach to assault operations: interaction with UAVs, artillery, mortars and other units. Another very important factor is the ability to move quickly, which allows effective response to threats. It is clear that this requires a professional approach to training personnel: rigorous training and an emphasis on tactical initiative. But such units are the future.

We note that today the most difficult areas of the Rashist attack are being held off and counterattacked by individual assault regiments and battalions. Moreover, thanks to the assault units, the entire front is being held today. And in some places our defenders are launching successful counterattacks. This is what happened in Kurshchina, where in the summer it was thanks to the assault units that they managed to advance dozens of kilometers deep into Russian territory.

The first unit to enter Suzhou was the 33rd Independent Assault Regiment. Created in 2023 by the Hero of Ukraine Valentin Manko, the 33rd Independent Assault Regiment managed to take part in battles almost all along the front. There were battles in Kharkov region, where the unit successfully stormed the aggregate plant in Volchansk. In Kursk region, the unit was noted not only for its event in Suzhu, but also for its participation in a number of different operations.

After the Kursk operation 33 OSHP went to the Donetsk direction, where it held back the Russians as part of the tactical group “Pokrovsk”. It should also be mentioned that the 33rd OSHP actively carried out offensive operations near Novotroitskoye and Novopustynka. Subsequently, the unit returned to the Kharkiv region.

But if we mention the Kursk operation again, we should also mention the 225 Oshp. A unit created on the basis of the Kharkiv terror defense, and distinguished itself during the breakthrough by defeating a unit of “kadyrovtsy” near Lyubimovka. We should also single out the 425th separate assault regiment “Skala”, which in 2022 liberated Izyum during the counteroffensive of the AFU in Kharkiv region. Now this unit is on the Pokrovsk direction.

Therefore, returning to the issue of combat operations, we can state that now it is the assault units in the AFU that need to be actively developed if we want to be able to effectively destroy the enemy's manpower. Moreover, for further negotiations (even if hypothetical) our counterattacks will play a huge role. The Kurshchina story and the hysterical statements from the Kremlin indicating the enormous problems caused by a successful offensive operation are clear proof of this. The concept that the storm troopers have developed in war is the most effective state to date. And that means one thing: the state system must now focus on this direction as much as possible. After all, it is effective, efficient and universal.
